Handouts

Handouts can make a presenter stand out from other presenters as most are unlikely to give any to the audience. On one or two pages, a handout may contain the key data from their presentation for the attendees to support any decision they would already have made during the talk. To act on it, they may need to explain the idea to their manager and co-workers. A handout with all data clearly laid out could help them.

The audience will be able to review the message on the same evening in their hotel room and be confident they understand it well enough to talk about it with other attendees the next day, while other presenters' ideas will wait for their slides to be uploaded a few days after the conference.

With handouts, the presenter's recommendation will have a greater chance to be acted upon sooner. The audience may read it again on their way home. By the time they go to work again, they may already be fully convinced to the new ideas and be ready to work on their implementation. Others' presentations - are still waiting to be uploaded. The handouts may already be circulating at other organisations helping to spread the message.

Here are examples of two 2-hour University lectures in Operations Management content squeezed respectively on one and two A4 pages. The amount of information to include will depend on the presenter, content and purpose. Less is more, and white space helps with understanding.
